Inside Analog Photography Interview

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Scott Sheppard from Inside Analog Photography asked for an interview a couple months ago and I was happy to give it. Nervous because I don’t normally like to talk – I hate my voice – but thankfully I didn’t annoy myself as much as I thought I would. What a relief! Thanks Scott! I think he asked some great questions and enabled me to give a good interview because of it. Inside Analog Photography is a gem of a Podcast. So many great interviews with some of today’s most recognized photographers. I’m honored to be amongst them all. If you love photography, even if you shoot digital, you should subscribe. There’s a wealth of information inside this podcast. You can hear me directly here – CLICK! And you can visit Inside Analog Photography’s website and I’ll be there soon too.

Please enjoy a photo from my last shoot in the desert with Meghan Claire. I have to work with her again soon. She’s amazing.

Sublime Nude, Model: Meghan Claire @ 2010 Zoe Wiseman

The le Nu LA show took off without me, but this video shows my image I made of Rei on the wall – the Quadtych! I wrote the forward for the book and the show, curated by Astor Morgan, was a big success! Thank you to everyone at A&I again and to Astor. I missed the big opening night to be with my family for my grandfather’s funeral.

I was gone for a couple weeks down south, New Orleans to be exact. It was good to be home. It was sad knowing that they’re going through yet another tragedy. I went down to Venice, Louisiana so I could see the marshes and swamps one last time before they become a dead zone. I’m crying as I’m typing this. I can’t express how much I love Louisiana in words. I became who I am today there. I feel the hurt. Tragic beauty. That’s my city. Chicago doesn’t know the Blues like New Orleans does. Life is cheap there, and at the same time the most valuable commodity on earth. I don’t know why they always have the world punch them like it does, but as I’m trying to think on the positive side of things, their artistic expression wouldn’t be the way it is without all this tragedy. It doesn’t make it good, the people do. They are some of the strongest people in heart that I know. And their pain is my pain. And as the oil is starting to reach the shores of Pesacola, Florida tonight, I feel their pain too. I spent many days on those beaches. Knowing there’s no hope is absolutely heartbreaking. I can’t even begin to speak about the animals suffering or … I’ll end it there. Everyone please keep these people in your hearts. Let’s make them even stronger and more resilient.

iPhone Photography Talk

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

I’ve been using my iPhone for almost everything lately. During a regular shoot I’ll stop and shoot a few images with my iPhone to manipulate on all the applications I have (too many). Rarely do I just use one application usually many different layers are applied. I’ve been seeing iPhoneography classes popping up here and there. And that’s fine. I’m just here to say that you don’t need to take a class to enjoy the fun of shooting with an iPhone. Maybe you’d have to take a class to learn how to print, or what an f-stop is, or how to make platinum prints, what types of film to use, how to use photoshop, etc. But, there’s really nothing special about learning how to use an iPhone and the multiple apps there are available to you from the Apple App Store. It’s actually the most dumbed down way to take pictures and that’s what makes it fun. Take the picture, run it through an app. Done. Maybe you run it through multiple apps? Whatever. But unless you’ve never taken a picture before (and some people who have never taken a picture before do quite well with an iPhone) there’s really nothing to learn. All you need to know are the names of the photo apps available. An iPhone Photography (iPhoneography) class isn’t going to teach you anything special about photography. All you need is imagination and the time it takes to figure out what each app does so that you can run your photos you think will look best with each app through the applications. In short, save your money for the apps, don’t spend it on silly classes. You have to see what they do – there’s an endless number of ways to use the applications. Some good, some bad. The fun part is figuring out what way works for you. With someone teaching you how, you don’t find the gold, you just do what they tell you to. So, I’m not telling you how to do anything here, just talking about the apps. You go visit them yourself in the app store and read more. Here’s a list of the applications I use regularly with ratings after descriptions:

Photomarkr: puts a copyright mark on your image – 10

Tiltshift: blurs selected areas of the photograph while leaving others sharp – 10

Tiltshiftgen: see above – 10

Photogene: let’s you adjust levels, crop and more – 8

Hipstamatic – this app has a few problems and until they have a fix for it I wouldn’t suggest trying to upload any images anywhere besides Flickr or Facebook and only through their application or you’ll only see a black graphic – but, this gives you different “film” types to choose from, “lenses” you can choose from (not really lenses or film, just programmed filter type junk in the app that makes it look like film, simulators). You can’t import images to this application and have to launch it in order to use it, huge downfall for myself. I don’t understand why they spent so much time on the graphics on the application (camera back simulation) when they should have spent some time coding an import from library button. You’re stuck with the images and can’t run them through the different film types or lenses to see what happens to each image, which makes learning what type of scene works best a hinderance. Though it is shooting exactly like you would with film, but if the theory of only having your phone with you all the time is why you take so many pictures didn’t apply here, I’d tell you to just go put film in your camera and use that. I’ll give this app a 5.

Camerabag: One of my favorite apps. Several different effects for your photos and it always solid on the iPhone. – 10

LoMob: Let’s you import your photos and put them through several old skool film types. – 10

FilmLab: Another film simulation application. It’s great as you can layer the film simulation and run an image through several times to achieve some cool looks. – 10

Cinemafx: This is one of the first apps I fell in love with. You can run through several different settings and make seriously dreamy/foggy/contrasty images. It does wonders for shots that might be a little too dark if you run it through the Elf Glow (one of my favs you’ll see). – 10+

Pro Snap – It’s a little janky, but sometimes it’s fun. I just tried launching it and it crashed and I have the 3gs iPhone, so, when it works fun when it doesn’t, who cares! There’s a multitude of other apps… – 7

Quadcamera – awesome. It acts like it’s named. You can take 4 pictures one right after the other only pushing the shutter button once. You can also take 8 at once. It displays in a row or in a square or rectangle. It will also animate the photos and make animated gifs from them and you can email them to yourself to view them. This is super fun for taking those kooky self portraits like you would in a photo booth. – 10+

Nightcamera – this app is kind of lame. It doesn’t really take better photos at night than the regular photos you can take just straight from your phone. Kind of a waste of time to download. – 3

bwCamera – just a really basic app. does one simple thing. uploads images to the app to turn them to black and white, or touch the camera icon and it will take the photo in black and white. it does that one thing really well. since a lot of apps do the exact same thing plus many other things, it’s not something completely necessary to have but i’ll give it an 8 because it’s never crashed and it’s always done this one thing well.

Photo Mojo – it’s decent. you can adjust colors, saturation, contrast, rotate the image. simple basic photo editing and it always works. i don’t use it very much, but if i wanted to rotate an image i’d run it through. – 8

Best Camera – This app is a lot like Camera bag, but it lets you decide to crop square, add a border, cross process (super saturated colors), change to black and white, add a tone, cool a tone down and you can add a vignette. I like using this app with other apps. I might run a photo through cinemafx then run it through camerabag then bring it over to Best Camera and see how funky I can make it. Especially when I’m bored on an airplane with nothing to do. – 10+

LOMO – Another one like a flip through of different film simulations. Though not as sophisticated so it might keep your ADD down to a minimum. It’s a dumbed down application that always does what you think it will. – 10

More LOMO – see above – 10

Joy Camera – is definitely joyful. Infrared, super cool film looking digi snaps, just get it. You’ll find yourself playing around losing track of time. ;) – 10

Iron Camera – I think they spent entirely too much time playing with cool graphics, but after playing around with it you’ll love it. You can blur several different angles, add funky borders, add cool colors and not just a couple – they’ve got blue, red, orange, yellow, green (eww green skin), purple… etc. Love this app. 10+

Sepia Camera – another dumbed down app that gives you options of different sepia tones. simple. works. 10

Then these three that will go in one post, ToyCamera, SepiaCamera, OldCamera – I think these apps might be free, and they should be. They’re super basic and you can’t import photos you already have stored on your phone. You’ll find that you won’t use the applications as much if you can’t import them from your iPhone library and it will bum you out that you downloaded an app if you can do that. But, on the other hand sometimes you’ll find yourself using it just to get away from having way too many options. These are all solid apps, just really basic and limited – 8.5

Polarize – this app is dumb to me. the only thing it does is put a polaroid border on your image – you know the SX-70 border. For me… being a connoisseur of everything Polaroid, I sort of find this app to be stupid. Pointless. Meh. But since it works and does what it should do – 6

FocalLab – blurs images, vignettes images, and you can resize images. basic. and i never use it. 8

iShake It – This is the first app I downloaded. And I only downloaded it because you have to shake your phone (shake it like a Polaroid Picture) in order to develop the image. I think I used it 5 times and got bored. Plus, that whole Polaroid connoisseur thing again… – 6

Photo fx – Yes. Get it. Ample processes and simulations. 10+

Pano – Now this app is cool. The only downside for this one is the image size saved. TINY and that’s a bummer because this could be so totally rad if it would be a really large image. You make a panograph by taking one picture and the app ghosts the image and puts it over the new view so you can line up the scene after you’ve moved down a bit. It’s fun. I’ll only give it a 9 though because of the image size. If that wasn’t a factor I’d give this a 12.

SwankoLab – This is cool, but again, more attention to graphics here than what the images really end up looking like. It’s a simulated darkroom. It has darkroom chemicals you can pour into a pan to develop the print. It’s fairly video game-ish. I think there are many other apps listed above us that basically give the same look that you can achieve with this app without the video game effect of trying to make you feel that you’re actually “developing” photographs. It’s fun if you’re bored and want to pretend that you’re in a darkroom. It’s obvious that they’ve put a lot of effort into it, and it’s kind of cool for someone who has never stepped foot inside a darkroom before because maybe it would entice them to do just that. I’ll give it an 8.

So there are some of the apps I’ve used and use. Get some of them. Play with them. GOOGLE the apps to see if there are Flickr groups specific to those apps so you can see what the pictures look like. See if someone has a blog set up for iPhone photography and tags the images with the apps they use. Flickr is probably a good way to judge what app you want to buy (a lot of the apps I listed are free though, just check). Lots of the applications have options to “upload to flickr” and it will automatically make a folder for you with the application name, sometimes.

This is the first nude I made with my iPhone that I imported the photograph through several photo applications. I think I used Cinemafx, Camerabag and Photogene on this image. I should take notes probably, but what’s fun is that it’s kind of like shooting with a toy camera, you never know quite what you’ll create until you get there.

iPhoneARTography.com

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

I’ve become addicted to making photographs on my iPhone. I have over 5500 images stored on it right now. So in order to make sense of all these images, I just launched (10 minutes ago) iPhoneARTography.com. This is where I will store all my iPhone art, obviously. It’s a Tumblr site too, so it’s easy to subscribe and follow. You can even submit your own iPhone pictures to this site if you want to by clicking on the “submit” link on the left.

I’m amazed at how easy it is to photograph, process, and even watermark your iPhone pictures directly on the phone without the need to download them to your computer first. All the images I will post there will all be processed, uploaded, and 100% made on my iPhone. I don’t even need to download them in order to upload them to the web. Tumblr has a fantastic iPhone app that you can use for that! And what about printing, you ask? What’s the use in having really cool images if you can’t hang them on the wall, right? Well, CanvasPop takes care of all that. They do amazing canvas prints from iPhone images. I’ve had several printed for myself and for friends and family. I’m a stickler for quality, and I thought for sure that I would have to make some adjustments to my quality meter when dealing with the iPhone image process. But, much to my astonishment, I was quite happy with the quality CanvasPop produced. Shocker! Now all we need is a book publisher that makes an iPhone application so that you can make your own books directly from your iPhone. Can’t you imagine little 4×4 books selling like hotcakes? I can. Earth to publishers! Come in publishers! Can you hear me? Get on the stick! ha. Why hasn’t Apple done it? HEY! Cupertino! I know you’re reading this. I see you in my stats! There’s money to be made here people! Just credit me, OK? Maybe give me a 2% share in profits? I’ll help anyone design the program to photographer’s tastes. Call me!

So, have fun following my new site and feel free to participate. I’d love it!

Enjoy an iPhone picture!

i Spy With My Plastic Eye, is a group exhibition visualized by photographer, Astor Morgan.  The exhibit, brought to life by A&I, is a testament to the unique qualities of toy cameras.  Each artist approached their imagery with a singular voice, using a variety of film types, techniques, and cameras.  The photographs in this exhibit speak of gesture, of time passing, of simplicity and complexity, allowing for a wide range of expression.  And all of this magic has been captured through an inexpensive plastic lens, part of an inexpensive plastic camera that inspires discovery and serendipity.

The i Spy With My Plastic Eye exhibit will be on display at 5th and Sunset Studios.  Available for viewing April 1st to April 30 by appointment only by calling 310.979.0212.  Books will be available with a “foreword” by Aline Smithson.  Proceeds of book and print sales benefit www.weSpark.org.

Artist’s reception and book signing April 16, 8pm to 11pm.

I just returned from Palm Springs and made some Polaroids with my Holga. Enjoy this one of Meghan. I was having a fight with my film trying to figure out the correct lighting to capture the perfect Silver Polaroid look and finally got it on the last frame. A salute to her patience as I cursed my camera and this film. I’m quite happy with this photo.

Fiat Lux ~ Gallery Exhibition at A&I

Monday, January 18th, 2010

Fiat Lux - Fine Art Nudes by Zoe Wiseman

Fiat Lux - Fine Art Nudes by Zoe Wiseman

Zoe Wiseman will be exhibiting 10 years of fine art nudes at A&I Photographic in Hollywood. Opening reception is February 18, 2010, 7PM to 10PM. A&I will be producing a book for the show, as well as a special limited edition book titled Fiat Lux.

50% of all proceeds will benefit The Weingart Center. They help many people here in Los Angeles transform themselves from being homeless to productive members of our community. Zoe lived in downtown Los Angeles for a year at 4th and Main Streets directly in the midst of skid row in a refurbished artist loft. The brutal inhumanity of it all affected her. She has decided to give 50% of all proceeds to an organization which focuses on transforming these lives and helping them get off the street.

A book signing, beer and wine bar, catered food and over 30 prints from several of her series. Models on the wall include; Ida Mae, Candace Nirvana, Jazmine Dominique, Natasha Kay, Marketa, Carlotta Champagne, Madame Bink, Muse, Kat Love, Ivory Flame, Stephanie Anne, Larva X, Rebecca Lawrence, Vassanta, Rei, Pash, Niecy Moss, Rebecca Fox, Jessamyne, Zinn Star, Soph and Maria Erickson.

Happy 2010, so long 2009…

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

2009 was rather good to me. I have a lot of things to be thankful for, and there are a lot of people out there I send my love to and thanks. You all know who you are… and there are so many of you I don’t think I could begin to name each one of you or I would be here till next year! Yes… I’m that thankful and that graciously overjoyed that you are all in my life.

In these troubled times of economic crisis and the loss of work of so many people around the world, 2010 really should be a time to come together and stand by one another in order to better all of our lives. I’ve been trying to do my part within the art community by building bridges and creating opportunities for not only myself, but for all the friends who share my love of photography. I was able to do this several times in 2009. I feel honored to have contributed to connecting people and hopefully leaving them with a bright spot when they look back upon the year in reflection.

January 2009 started out working with the Palm Springs Photo Festival producing all the workshops and organizing all of those days. Finding talent and assistants and working with some quite amazing photographers helping them get their classes off without a hitch. I got to meet some of my favorite photographers, Greg Gorman, Steve McCurry and Duane Michals and help them produce an outstanding workshop program for their students. It wasn’t all fun and games at times because it was a lot of work, but it was a great experience that I’ll always look back on and smile at. A bright spot.

I launched ARTnudes Network in June – A Networking/blogging website for models, photographers, painters, sculptures and sketchers – Mostly fine art nude photography, but all artists are welcome to jump in as long as it’s art related. I’ve had this concept on hold for so many years and it is amazing to finally get it going and see so many people connecting with each other. There are still many things to do with it and it will be done! It’s intended for serious artists, and artists who want to be serious.

In August my best friend, brides maid, and always epic photographically model (that was a mouth full) – Ida Mae, gave birth to a baby boy. I am so happy for her!!! We were planning on another maternity shoot before she gave birth two days before she went into labor a month early. What a beautiful moment of 2009. I got to see her in November when I was staying in Hanover, New Hampshire over Thanksgiving. Brief but special. It was great seeing her in her element.

In October I had a most excellent vacation to Australia with several of my friends from Community Zoe. I’ve written quite a bit about it on this site, but I can’t begin to describe the amazing time that was had. It was perfect. The best one yet. Might have to do it again! This is definitely a bright spot – but more like an entire sun ray – or if you would look at a pie chart this would take over about 40% of the pie. At least. So, super sunny spot. Maybe I should create a pie chart with the amount of bright spots and relative percentage of impact they had on me over the year. hmm.

In September my modeling work was hanging in two galleries at the same time. In Melbourne, Australia in the work of Michael Marlborough and in Charlotte, North Carolina in the work of Bryce Lankard. Two of my best friends and they both had gallery shows at the same time. Kind of cool. And my photography work was published in the book 210 Photographers – 1×2. That three thing. Sunny.

October was Australia, but more of my work was also published in the book NUDES Indexx II . Then the newspaper clip about all of us in the Cairns’ Post.

Once returning from Australia I helped Jeff Dunas get his Palm Springs Photo Festival community site up and running, then it was a gallery show at A&I called I Spy With My Plastic Eye, and another book publishing that was produced for the show. The print that I made for the show has sold too, so bonus! It all benefitted WeSpark – a non-profit organization that provides free support for cancer patients. It makes me feel good that my art was benefitting such an important cause and thank you to A&I, Astor Morgan and Baret Lepejian for having me be a part of such a cool event!

I attended the BMI Awards to watch my husband receive his 8th BMI Crystal Statue @ the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, the one from Pretty Woman. You never know who will be at these award ceremonies. One year we were sitting at a table next to Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys and another time Paul Anka and Mark Mothersbaugh from DEVO and another time the family members from the late Howling Wolf. It’s great people watching, good food, and a great celebration for all the recording artists that BMI represents. And concerning copyright, I don’t know of another organization that fights for the rights of artists in the way they do. If only photographers, painters and other artists had something similar. I learn a lot each time I go. And it’s always a proud moment watching my husband get an award.

In December I got a wonderful opportunity to have a solo showing of my nudes @ A&I in Hollywood. I’ll be producing a book and showing about 40 – 50 of my prints. The opening reception will be on February 18, 2010. (my fingers still want to type 2009, eeek, have to get used to that!) So, I’ve been in editing mode from the day I found out until now. Excluding the lovely time I spent in Kauai, Hawaii during the Holidays. I think I’ll be making Hawaii a December ritual.

Speaking of Kauai – I also was able to make beautiful pictures with a model there named Whitne Drake who, as luck would have it, lives about 15 miles from where we were staying. So, I’ll end this with a few pictures we made together in Kauai at the end of the road and at the end of 2009.

Thank you to all who have come into my life, I’ve learned many things from all of you. If you stand in the light, the shadows look prettier. And if we can all come together for good in 2010 maybe the shadows won’t feel so forgotten or “insert random thought of wisdom here.” I think all of us can make it brighter. I’ll do my best.

Enjoy some pictures. Film images coming later… these are iPhone nudes if you can believe it. My secret’s out!
