My Book is finished

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

I have always wanted to print a book of my work that I could be satisfied with. When I think of art books I envision each page to be a representation of a print that I would make. So many self publishers fall short of this goal and really don’t care about the quality of each page, but more so the quantity of books they can get through their printers which aren’t usually calibrated frequently. When the printers aren’t calibrated frequently this causes each book to be printed different from the next which could be one of the issues, but there are several. As you can see on my site I sell a book printed by Blurb. I’ll be taking that down and “discontinuing” sales of DISCONTINUde as the quality is not up to my standards. They missed my deep blacks in ALL of my prints. There is no detail. It’s just black. One of the prints I’m attaching in this posting … Achilles Knee (model, Stephanie Anne)… none of the trees to the left of the picture even show up in the book. They are just a black blob, as are each of the prints in the book. And that’s a shame because the size of the book is really cute and square (5×5) like my photos and I wanted it to be a nice little book one could keep. And many of my sepia toned images turned green. So, even if I used a little color to try and get their printers to behave in a manner that would look good for my prints, nothing worked. I even calibrated Photoshop to use their color calibration. It was really disappointing. This was also to be a book that they would showcase at an event so people could see the quality of their work. It was so disappointing for me that I told them they couldn’t showcase my book. I spent days and weeks putting that book together too.

A&I had printed a couple of my photographs in their books for group shows they had which I was a part of, and both of my photographs looked excellent inside of Nude X and I Spy With My Plastic Eye. When asked to do a show of my work and a book, I went into the book making process with a lot more optimism and was not sorry for it. Creating a book is a lot of work. It’s much more than just slapping an image on a page. It takes time to create a flow, work out where you need to put type, what font to use, which image should represent each theme. So when you spend that much effort to layout and creating an art piece with your photography and then paying for it, it’s so nice when it all comes out perfect. My book Fiat Lux is beautiful. And I’m not tooting my own horn or A&I’s because they gave me a show. I’m blunt… if something sucks I usually say so straight away. I’m not getting paid to say this either. They aren’t sponsoring me, I’m paying for my own publishing. They really do care about quality and it’s obvious that they all enjoy seeing a great product come from their lab. In fact, I’m sure they would be embarrassed if something subpar ever exited the building.

I’m very excited for people to see and purchase this book during my opening… and will not hesitate to add my signature to it because it is something I definitely approve of. When I held it for the first time yesterday, I turned into a giggly little girl. See you all next Thursday the 18th!

No model, no problem

Nov. 28, 2009 - Self Portrait

Nov. 28, 2009 - Self Portrait

There’s a corner in my house that gets such beautiful light. Upon return from the frozen tundra which is the North East, I’m doing rituals to wrap my heart back around the sun. One was sitting in this corner in the morning. And I thought, “I really wish I had a model.” then said, “duh.” No model, no problem.

More Images from Australia

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

The last time I worked with Rei was in 2004 and one of the images we made has been published 5 different times. It was a pleasure to work with her again. There are more images yet to be scanned, but I’m already in love with several of these. The rest will be placed in my permanent photo gallery on this site @ the link above called Photography. ;)

Much to Catch Up On!

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

What an amazing time I had in ….. Australia! Carsten Tschach was the only one who guessed correctly. But, I wonder if he had the inside scoop. ;) ha.

So, back to reality and processing many many images. I’ll catch up with everything as soon as I’m finished, but wanted to share just a couple and some news! News first…

Feierabend ~ Nudes Index II

Feierabend ~ Nudes Index II

The book I’m in is now available to purchase! I still have no idea what images they chose. Normally I’m sent a PDF for approval, but I know it took quite a long time for the book to be released so I assume they went through some hoops at some point so I’m not too worried. It’s out and I’m anxiously awaiting my copy. I’m sure it looks great.

I was also spotted in the Cairns Post on October 10 with one of my great friends Candace Nirvana! A lot of things were spoken about fine art nudes, and I realized it was just going to be a little fluff piece, but it still put a great smile on my face! I said A LOT more about timelessness and the appropriateness of what we do, but they wanted something fun to say about Mission Beach. You give and take in these situations. The kicker was when Stephanie Anne and I went to Paranella Park and a park employee recognized me after being curious about why we were staying in certain locations longer than the average park attendee. They have a nice little restaurant at the park – the chicken and vegetable pie is highly recommended. We sat down to coffee and chicken pie and the park employee walked up to us and asked if this was me. I giggled and said yes, then he asked for my autograph. What a riot! The park has pictures and autographs on the walls as you go in… so if you ever go to the park let me know if I’m hanging there! Cameron Attree graced the article with his photographs. If only we/he could have shown what we wanted to… in a perfect world. The Australians are amazing! I’ve cried each time I’ve had to leave this beautiful country, and this time was no exception. Maybe I need a winter home there. Or maybe it was just as great as it was because I was surrounded with some really good friends… You really don’t think that an online world could ever amount to anything lasting, but after doing these for 8 years and seeing those you communicate with online on a daily basis brought together over a common love, everyone is happy, helpful, and they all end up being extended family after a time.  And that’s just how I feel about all these beautiful people… Sisters, brothers. Good stuff. I love them all. Especially Michael Marlborough who has been a friend since 3 days after I launched my very first website in 1997. He helped me so much this year. I don’t know what I could ever do to say Thank You… except to say, Thank You. Australia may have help put that over-the-top Aussie juice all over it so that it messed up my emotional reasoning even more. It was definitely a combination of both. I’ll be back!

I also loved this snap of myself and three of my incredible friends that Cameron took with my camera… Thank you Cam!

Lovely Women!

And Cameron ALSO was gracious enough to take a group shot of us all with all of our flags that became a tradition last year.

And last but definitely not least! Some final images I created while in OzLand.

Triptychs with Jessamyn

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Jessamyn – the awesome model featured as you log on is featured in these Triptychs. She’s an amazing New York model, an artist in her own right and super fun to be around. I have quite a few more images that I will be posting in my photography gallery soon.

These were taken with a Speed Graphic 4×5 Camera and Polaroid Type 55. I still have two cases left!
