Some of my Favorites from my Mexican Shooting Adventure

I’ve been trying to pick some of my favorite images from my Mexican festival that I like the best. It’s really hard to choose what one’s will be “the one” when you work with such amazing models. Every image just seems like it’s just as good as the other. Trimming is tough. I might not be done for quite some time. In a normal situation I may shoot once or twice a month, so I have ample time to digest each shoot. The festival I put on is like one or two shoots per day for 8 days. So that’s like 6 months crammed into a week. Is 20 OK? 30? 10? Are there rules? I have my own rules I place upon myself, but sometimes I wonder if I’m being hard enough on myself. I’m sure every photographer does. If you click on “full screen” you can see them bigger, but they may get pixelated due to the fact I never put large files on the web. Prints are ALWAYS so much prettier. :)

The Desert’s Dragon

Monday, June 14th, 2010

I’ve spent a lot of time in the desert. It’s fun to walk around and see pictures, make pictures and be away from society. It’s quiet. Wind and critters are all you can hear. It’s always nice working with someone who likes to look for pictures too. Meghan’s like that. No jabbering on, just looking with me. It helped tremendously when she saw a Manzanita bush and commented on how cool it looked. I wouldn’t have paid it any attention. I did though because I’ve learned to listen to what I like to call “desert magic.” Subtle hints that lead you to something profound or magical. Her mention of the manzanita bush was that. There was a dragon there in the shadows.

These were the other images we made before and after. Enjoy.

Apr 16 2010
i Spy With My Plastic Eye

5th And Sunset Studios – 12322 Exposition Blvd West Los Angeles, CA  90064

Admission: FREE

i Spy With My Plastic Eye, is a group exhibition visualized by photographer, Astor Morgan.  The exhibit, brought to life by A&I, is a testament to the unique qualities of toy cameras.  Each artist approached their imagery with a singular voice, using a variety of film types, techniques, and cameras.  The photographs in this exhibit speak of gesture, of time passing, of simplicity and complexity, allowing for a wide range of expression.  And all of this magic has been captured through an inexpensive plastic lens, part of an inexpensive plastic camera that inspires discovery and serendipity.

The i Spy With My Plastic Eye exhibit will be on display at 5th and Sunset Studios.  Available for viewing April 1st to April 30 by appointment only by calling 310.979.0212.  Books will be available with a “foreword” by Aline Smithson.  Proceeds of book and print sales benefit www.weSpark.org.

Artist’s reception and book signing April 16, 8pm to 11pm.

I just returned from Palm Springs and made some Polaroids with my Holga. Enjoy this one of Meghan. I was having a fight with my film trying to figure out the correct lighting to capture the perfect Silver Polaroid look and finally got it on the last frame. A salute to her patience as I cursed my camera and this film. I’m quite happy with this photo.
