The Happy Muse

Knowing how to work with a model is crucial when producing memorable photographs. This workshop, taught by photographer and former model Zoe Wiseman & fashion, figure model Larva X demonstrates how to establish a positive working relationship between artist and model and the importance of making a model comfortable and relaxed – The Happy Muse.

The first weekend will include lecture and an instructional photo shoot. Zoe will photograph Larva while students observe how each of them communicates with one another. Topics covered include communication that procures great flow during a shoot, proper etiquette before and after the shoot, the importance of establishing a connection between model and photographer, handling releases, and setting up shoots 2, 3, 4, and 5. Emphasis will be on making the model happy so he or she will want to continue the working relationship. Two shooting sessions with professional figure models will provide students with an opportunity to put theory into practice. Each session will be followed by a group critique.

A portion of the workshop will also talk about marketing student work and the importance of social media. Digital and film users are welcome, although film users may not have the time to scan and process their images for group critiques. Participants will work with a 3:1 student to model ratio.

Workshop fee: $535 + $150 figure model fee

Scott Sheppard from Inside Analog Photography asked for an interview a couple months ago and I was happy to give it. Nervous because I don’t normally like to talk – I hate my voice – but thankfully I didn’t annoy myself as much as I thought I would. What a relief! Thanks Scott! The le Nu LA show took off without me, but this video shows my image I made of Rei on the wall – the Quadtych! I wrote the forward for the book and the show, curated by Astor Morgan, was a big success! Thank you to everyone at A&I again and to Astor. I missed the big opening night to be with my family for my grandfather’s funeral.

I was gone for a couple weeks down south, New Orleans to be exact. It was good to be home. It was sad knowing that they’re going through yet another tragedy. I went down to Venice, Louisiana so I could see the marshes and swamps one last time before they become a dead zone. I’m crying as I’m typing this. I can’t express how much I love Louisiana in words. I became who I am today there. I feel the hurt. Tragic beauty. That’s my city. Chicago doesn’t know the Blues like New Orleans does. Life is cheap there, and at the same time the most valuable commodity on earth. I don’t know why they always have the world punch them like it does, but as I’m trying to think on the positive side of things, their artistic expression wouldn’t be the way it is without all this tragedy. It doesn’t make it good, the people do. They are some of the strongest people in heart that I know. And their pain is my pain. And as the oil is starting to reach the shores of Pesacola, Florida tonight, I feel their pain too. I spent many days on those beaches. Knowing there’s no hope is absolutely heartbreaking. I can’t even begin to speak about the animals suffering or … I’ll end it there. Everyone please keep these people in your hearts. Let’s make them even stronger and more resilient.

I’ve become addicted to making photographs on my iPhone. I have over 5500 images stored on it right now. So in order to make sense of all these images, I just launched (10 minutes ago) iPhoneARTography.com. This is where I will store all my iPhone art, obviously. It’s a Tumblr site too, so it’s easy to subscribe and follow. You can even submit your own iPhone pictures to this site if you want to by clicking on the “submit” link on the left.

I’m amazed at how easy it is to photograph, process, and even watermark your iPhone pictures directly on the phone without the need to download them to your computer first. All the images I will post there will all be processed, uploaded, and 100% made on my iPhone. I don’t even need to download them in order to upload them to the web. Tumblr has a fantastic iPhone app that you can use for that! And what about printing, you ask? What’s the use in having really cool images if you can’t hang them on the wall, right? Well, CanvasPop takes care of all that. They do amazing canvas prints from iPhone images. I’ve had several printed for myself and for friends and family. I’m a stickler for quality, and I thought for sure that I would have to make some adjustments to my quality meter when dealing with the iPhone image process. But, much to my astonishment, I was quite happy with the quality CanvasPop produced. Shocker! Now all we need is a book publisher that makes an iPhone application so that you can make your own books directly from your iPhone. Can’t you imagine little 4×4 books selling like hotcakes? I can. Earth to publishers! Come in publishers! Can you hear me? Get on the stick! ha. Why hasn’t Apple done it? HEY! Cupertino! I know you’re reading this. I see you in my stats! There’s money to be made here people! Just credit me, OK? Maybe give me a 2% share in profits? I’ll help anyone design the program to photographer’s tastes. Call me!

i Spy With My Plastic Eye, is a group exhibition visualized by photographer, Astor Morgan.  The exhibit, brought to life by A&I, is a testament to the unique qualities of toy cameras.  Each artist approached their imagery with a singular voice, using a variety of film types, techniques, and cameras.  The photographs in this exhibit speak of gesture, of time passing, of simplicity and complexity, allowing for a wide range of expression.  And all of this magic has been captured through an inexpensive plastic lens, part of an inexpensive plastic camera that inspires discovery and serendipity.

The i Spy With My Plastic Eye exhibit will be on display at 5th and Sunset Studios.  Available for viewing April 1st to April 30 by appointment only by calling 310.979.0212.  Books will be available with a “foreword” by Aline Smithson.  Proceeds of book and print sales benefit www.weSpark.org.

I just returned from Palm Springs and made some Polaroids with my Holga. Enjoy this one of Meghan. I was having a fight with my film trying to figure out the correct lighting to capture the perfect Silver Polaroid look and finally got it on the last frame. A salute to her patience as I cursed my camera and this film. I’m quite happy with this photo.
